Introduction: This is a significant stone as it records the death of one Rabbi Zev Wolish the son of Joel Sirkes, known as the Gaon (Great Scholar) by the acronym Habah. There is a difficulty in that the Rabbi Joel Sirkes lived from 1561 to 1640. Rabbi Zev Wolish passed away 5669 (1909). It is clear from the inscription that the b'r means "the son of." One suggestion is that this Rabbi was descendant of Rabbi Joel Sirkes. It does not, however adequately, explain the departure from a long established tradition that the name of the deceased bear the name of his/her father on the headstone.|Our eyes pour tears over the departure of of a God fearing man, a wonderous scholar in Torah. He did not not study [meaning uncertain] Our teaching, our Rabbi Zev Wolish (Volish) the son of Joel Sirkes, recognized as the the Gaon (Great Scholar) Habah May his memory be for blessing. He departed on teh 17th of Heshvan 5669 (1909).
